Leather products are popular among all creeds of people and in all parts of the world. Leather can be of any animal. Religious sentiments also decide the production and market of leather in some countries.

We use numerous leather products everyday, but some people are allergic to leather and leather products. This type of allergy is called contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis can be of three different types – irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and photo contact dermatitis.

The allergy of leather comes under the irritant contact dermatitis category. This type of allergy is rare among humans. These people can be allergic to the various toxic plants such as poison ivy and poison oak. Allergens also include gold, nickel, and chromium.

Tanning is an important process in the making of leather products. Tanning is done with the help of chromium. Even after tanning, the leather may contain measurable amount of chromium. Adhesives and varnishes are also used in the process and labled as allergens by the experts.
